      <image:title>Imagining Oblique Strategies - Imagining Oblique Strategies</image:title>
<image:caption>Created by Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt in 1975, Oblique Strategies was a deck of cards meant to inspire tangential problem solving. It did so by offering users a series of vague prompts presented plainly on cards, that would be selected at random. The varied collection of strategies offered ranged from seemingly straightforward concepts like, “emphasize differences” to ones that were more obscure like, “from nothing to more than nothing.” The intention of these prompts was not to act as explicit directions but, instead, to incite users to approach and look at problems in new ways. For my senior thesis project, I’ve selected 50 of these aforementioned cards and visualized their ambiguous aphorisms through a series of experiments. My work is both process-oriented and reaction-based, beginning with no final planned product in mind. Instead, each piece comes together through a series of intuitive and almost meditative experiments uniquely inspired by its particular prompt. Though each poster begins in the same way, with the initial prompt typeset plainly, my subsequent methods of construction fluctuate between analog and digital processes of creation and manipulation. In my process of making, I’ve tried to not concern myself with constraining my posters to fit within any particular style or follow any particular design rules, outside of the ones I’ve set for myself, thus giving myself a chance to explore all the different things that design can be. My resulting product is a series of unique posters that strive to embody the original deck of cards in both their concept and content. <image:caption>I created this type treatment as a response to Natalia Ilyn's "The Love Bucket," that discusses the idea that designers are born and not made. As much as I loved Natalia's writing, I personally saw some holes in the argument she was making about fear and love in graphic design. So, for my response, I physically cut some holes into her argument using quotes from the movie Donnie Darko. Specifically the scene in the movie where Donnie is asked to place a hypothetical situation on a scale of fear and love and refuses based on the ridiculousness of the situation.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Geometric Portraits are the very first project I do with my Computer Graphics students. I love starting with this project because it really gets students excited about making art right off the bat. At the same time, the repetitive nature inherent to creating this type of portrait helps students build skill and familiarity with illustrator’s tools quickly and often without realizing that they’re even doing it. The impressiveness of the final product acts as a huge confidence boost to students and motivates them to take on even more complex projects in the future. Artwork made by a 10th grade student.</image:caption>

Designed by the yearbook’s Head Editor for an assignment in Computer Graphics 2, this illustration features a logo depicting the school’s mascot in its many stages of life - from hatching egg to Mighty Soaring Falcon. Each stage of life represents a different grade level present at school and each of those aforementioned grade levels is indicated by an initial hidden in the corresponding bird’s markings.
